Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

To go along with its strong overall score, we awarded this nursing home an elite grade of A+ for its short-term care score. Our short-term care grades are crucial for individuals requiring rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes a broad range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. This facility excelled at the highest level in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is an excellent sign. The last item we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Delaware in this area with 66.2 percent of its patients returning home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

Adding to its impressive resume, this nursing home also excelled in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category. Our nursing grade is largely tied to a facility's nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per patient each day. At least one quarter of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are skilled nurses. This is a high ratio of skilled nursing care. In determining our scores, we apply more weight to hours provided by registered or licensed nurses. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

Tallying yet another strong category grade, this nursing home also excelled in the area of inspections, where it earned an impressive grade of A-. Few facilities fared better in this area. Our inspection ratings account for a host of factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this category usually have very few severe deficiencies. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. Remember that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in this industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The final area we assessed was long-term care, in which this nursing home received a B-. Although this proved to be its worst category score, this is nevertheless not a terrible score. In crafting these long-term care scores, we assess the nursing home's personal care services. After we finished assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination data. We were pleased to discover that this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.39 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this facility has less hospitalizations than many nursing homes.
