Short-term Care Quality
To go along with its strong overall score, we awarded this nursing home an elite grade of A+ for its short-term care score. Our short-term care grades are crucial for individuals requiring rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes a broad range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. This facility excelled at the highest level in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is an excellent sign. The last item we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Delaware in this area with 66.2 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
Adding to its impressive resume, this nursing home also excelled in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category. Our nursing grade is largely tied to a facility's nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per patient each day. At least one quarter of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are skilled nurses. This is a high ratio of skilled nursing care. In determining our scores, we apply more weight to hours provided by registered or licensed nurses. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.

Remember that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in this industry.
Long-term Care Quality
