Facility Inspections
Although we didn't give this facility a good overall score, we actually gave it a relatively strong grade in the area of inspections, where it earned a B+. Inspection ratings are tied to several datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important thing to look for on these reports. Most importantly, you should avoid nursing homes with severe deficiencies linked to risks to resident well being. While this nursing home had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a middle of the pack grade in the category of short-term care, where we awarded it a grade of B-. Short-term care grades are often employed to score a facility's rehabilitation services. In order to have highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to offer higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. In this place's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than the average facility. The last datapoint we considered in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We discovered that just 5.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is below average.

Long-term Care Quality
Tragically, this facility received an F for its long-term care grade. Facilities that do not score well in long-term care often don't provide as much nursing care and also may be struggling in a few of the areas of routine healthcare services we looked at. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. We found that this facility vaccinated just 87.5 percent of its patients, which is somewhat alarming. Surprisingly, this place was actually decent at keeping its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0.03 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. This was its best score in this category.
Nurse Quality
The next area we scored was nursing. This nursing home received a rock bottom grade of F in this area. In determining a nursing home's nursing score, we assess the number of hours nurses are caring for patients and the levels of training of those nurses. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is well below average. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality measures in calculating our nursing ratings. This facility fared well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be reliable measures of the quality of nursing care.
