In addition to faring well overall, this facility received nearly flawless government inspections. As a result, it received one of our highest scores in that area with an A+. Perhaps the most critical factor we consider in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This place was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

This facility also received an A+ for its long-term care grade. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. One of the criteria we considered in addition to this nursing home's above average nursing hours is vaccinations. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths for the elderly. This combination proved to be successful as this facility keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had only 1.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a much better hospitalization rate than the majority of nursing homes.

Another one of this facility's impressive category grades came in the area of nursing care. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B. Nursing scores are mostly based on a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides an extremely impressive 4.1 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is among the highest figures in the nation. Finally, this facility was also above average in each of the major quality-based metrics we assessed in this category. It performed well in the area of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.

Turning to the fourth category, this nursing home was given an acceptable short-term care rating. Although this isn't as good as many of its other scores, this is still a middle of the pack score. In the area of short-term care, we endeavor to assess indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We look at a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. This proved to be more of a strength for this facility. In fact, we found that it outperformed the majority of facilities in the nation with 49.7 percent of its patients returning home. This is a higher rate than most nursing homes.
