Grade: A-plus

To pair with a favorable overall grade, we awarded this place a grade of A+ for inspections. Inspection scores are based on many items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that score well in this category tend to have few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Adding to its top-shelf resume, this nursing home also performed well in our long-term care category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A in that category. Facilities that excel in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. After assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is significantly higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

The third area we looked at is short-term care. Contributing to its dominant resume, this facility also excelled in that category. In fact, we gave it a of A- in the category. In computing our short-term care grades, we look at the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This score is more often than not a useful measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that this nursing home submitted registered nurse or physical therapist staffing data. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return home from this facility. We found that 7.7 percent of this facility's patients returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

The last area we assessed was nursing. We gave this nursing home one of our higher scores in this area, with a grade of B. Even though this wasn't as favorable as several of this facility's other grades, it is still a positive grade. When computing a nursing home's nursing score, we assess the quantity of hours nurses are caring for patients as well as the levels of training of the nurses. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Kansas in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as employing a system of turning a resident more frequently.
