Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Our inspection scores account for several factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better scores in this area generally have very few severe deficiencies. This place was assessed 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of these deficiencies to create an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

On the list of its many elite scores, this nursing home received first-rate long-term care score. In fact, we gave it a score of A- in that category. Long-term care grades in this range generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. One of the datapoints we considered after nurse's aid hours is vaccines. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 94.69697 percent of its residents. Vaccination is a proven method to avoid unnecessary deaths for the nursing home population. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Moving on our next area, we gave this facility a score of A- for its short-term care score. This is a first-rate score. In forming our short-term care ratings, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our goal is to formulate a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 6.2 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: C

The last area we rated was nursing. We gave this facility a solid grade in that area, with a C. Although this wasn't as favorable as some of its other scores, it is nevertheless nothing to be ashamed of. Nursing scores are based in large part on quality and quantity of nursing care. This nursing home averages just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low figure. Finally, our nursing ratings also consider quality-based metrics, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the highest total nursing hours per resident, this nursing home actually performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is typically a good indicator that a place has sufficient quality controls in place. Many falls could be avoided if a nursing home provides enough nurses aids to assist its residents.
