Short-term Care Quality
In addition to being a quality facility overall, this facility excelled in the category of short-term care, where it earned an A+. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to judge a facility's rehabilitation services. To provide highly scored rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This nursing home provides more services with physical therapists and registered nurses than most nursing homes we looked at. This is usually a favorable sign. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients that who were able to eventually return home from this facility. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy staffing, we found that it fared as well as just about any facility in the country with 83.9 percent of its residents returning home. Most nursing homes are below 50 percent in this metric.
One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B+. In determining our nursing grades, we look at both staffing levels and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This facility provided 5.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily, which is among the better totals in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We were really impressed by these figures. In addition to providing impressive levels of care, this facility also excelled in the quality-based metrics we looked at. For example, it performed as well as any nursing home in the country in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We view these datapoints as good indicators of the caliber of nursing care provided.
Adding to its strong resume, this facility earned a grade of B for its inspections rating. This is a well above average score in this category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these can be quite insignificant. This nursing home received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered severe. This tells you that CMS did not deem any of these deficiencies to be an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few relatively minor dings are not something to panic about.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we analyzed was long-term care. We gave this nursing home a D in the area of long-term care, rendering this its least impressive category. When facilities receive this kind of grade in long-term care it is typically a bad sign for resident care and it may indicate that the nursing home is not as well-staffed with nurses and aids. Once we looked at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination data. We weren't able to locate information about this nursing home's vaccination rates. To our surprise, this facility was actually decent at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had just 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. This is its best feature in this category.
