Short-term Care Quality
In addition to being a quality facility overall, this facility really excelled in our short-term care category, where it received an A. Few nursing homes fared better in this area. In the area of short-term care, we try to qualify indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. Finally, we looked at the percentage of residents that ultimately returned home from this nursing home. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy staffing, we found that it fared as well as just about any facility with 69.6 percent of its residents returning home. Most facilities are below 50 percent in this metric.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also excelled in inspections, where it earned a grade of A-. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with better grades in this category typically avoided the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. While this place had some minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This tells you the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should point out that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.
Nurse Quality
Another one of this facility's impressive category grades came in the area of nursing care. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B+. The nursing rating is based on a handful of components, most of which are based on levels of nurse staffing. With 5.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day, this nursing home surpassed the overwhelming majority of facilities. Lastly, this nursing home also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. In terms of the percentage of its patients suffering falls which lead to major injury, this nursing home performed better than the national average.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we assessed was long-term care, proved to be this facility's least impressive area. We awarded this nursing home a D in that category. This really is one of the few dings of an otherwise strong report card. In a long-term care setting, the primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. After considering nursing hours provided by this nursing home, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination record. With a long-term care grade in this range, we were surprised to discover that this nursing home received respectable marks in both statistics. Indeed, this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which appears to be higher than the majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this facility was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
