Long-term Care Quality
We also found that this nursing home excelled in long-term care. We gave them an A+ in this area. Facilities that receive this type of grade in this category typically provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure residents are well cared for. After assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we next considered the facility's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 3.67 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this wasn't as impressive as some of its other scores in this area, this figure can be skewed for some facilities based on the medical complexity of patients.
Facility Inspections
This facility also performed well in the area of inspections. In fact, it earned a nearly flawless inspection report this year. It received one of our highest scores in that category with an A. Few nursing homes with an overall score in this range performed as well in multiple categories. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection grades. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies can be relatively minor. This place received 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that the inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to create an imminent risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of B-. This facility didn't perform quite as well in this category as it did in some other categories. Nevertheless, this is still a respectable score. There are a host of criteria included in this area. Most of the criteria relate to the quantity of nurse staffing. According to its CMS data, this facility provided an average of 3.9 hours of nursing care per resident each day, which was above the national average. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based measures, such as minimizing major falls. This facility performed admirably in this datapoint. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Many falls can be avoided if a nursing home offers enough nurses to assist its patients.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to our last area, we awarded this facility a D for short-term care. This was the facility's worst category rating. However, you shouldn't over-emphasize a single bad score. In computing our short-term care grades, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our goal is to devise a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. It appears that this nursing home was subpar in terms of its quantity of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its residents based on the measures we looked at. The final datapoint we considered in this category is the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 33.1 percent of its residents returning home.
