Facility Inspections
The main reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it received an excellent inspection grade. In fact, its inspection grade was far better than its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave this facility a grade of A-. Our inspection ratings are tied to items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that score well in this category typically have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Fortunately, although this facility had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's more impressive category grades came in the category of long-term care. In that area, we gave this nursing home a grade of B+. It actually outpaced most facilities in this area. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. Once we finished looking at the quantity of nursing care, we next considered the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 96.16438 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia tragically can be a life threatening condition for nursing home patients so we like it when a nursing home doesn't leave its residents vulnerable. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.96 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Nurse Quality
One of this facility's better category grades was in the area of nursing care. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of C. Nursing ratings are primarily associated with the facility's nurse staffing. This facility provided just 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Lastly, despite not having the highest total nursing hours, this nursing home actually performed admirably in the metric of preventing major falls. This is typically a reliable indicator that a facility has sufficient quality controls in place.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home's least impressive area was short-term care, which is the final category we looked at. In this area, we gave this facility a grade of D. In calculating our short-term care grades, we scrutinize the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. This category is generally a useful measure of a facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. Finally, we considered the percentage of residents who who were able to eventually return home from this facility. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 38 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
