Registered Staff Hours
Nurse Quality
While we did not rate this facility favorably overall, we want to point out its much more favorable nursing rating this year. We gave it a respectable grade of B in this area, which was much better than its overall rating. When calculating a nursing home's nursing score, we assess the number of hours nurses spend with patients and the skill levels of the nurses. This particular nursing home provided 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can frequently be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Facility Inspections
We were also pleasantly surprised to award this nursing home a relatively favorable inspection rating as well. We awarded it a respectable grade of B- in this category, which easily topped its overall score. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining these inspection ratings. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are quite minor. This place was hit with 7 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of these deficiencies to create an imminent risk to patient safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.

Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's next highest area turned out to be long-term care. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of B-. For patients looking for a permanent residence as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. One of the criteria we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccinations. Fortunately, this nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 96.91445 percent of its patients. This facility was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we scored was short-term care, in which this nursing home was given an abysmal grade here as well. It received an F in this area, which is obviously somewhat alarming. In computing these short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our goal is to formulate a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The final measure we considered in this area is the percentage of patients that were able to return home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 2.9 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below average.
