Short-term Care Quality
On top of receiving a great overall grade, this facility also received an A+ short-term care grade. Our short-term care grade is generally used to grade a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. In order to offer highly rated rehabilitation services, facilities generally must provide higher levels of skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. This facility excelled at the highest level in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is an excellent sign. The last item we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Maryland in this area with 69.7 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
Adding to an already impressive profile, this facility also received virtually flawless health inspections in recent years. As a result, we awarded it an A+ inspection grade. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these issues by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are rare in the industry.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A in our nursing category. In computing a facility's nursing score, we look at the amount of time nurses are caring for patients as well as the skill levels of the nurses. This nursing home boasts a really impressive 4.3 hours of nursing care per resident daily, of which a significant percentage was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly highly trained levels of nurses. On top of providing impressive levels of care, this place also performed well in several of the quality measures we assessed. In terms of the percentage of its residents suffering falls leading to major injury, this place performed as well as any facility the nation.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we scored is long-term care, which is a weak spot for this facility. We gave this facility a grade of D in our long-term care category, leaving this as the nursing home's least impressive category. We would nevertheless recommend that you look at the bigger picture. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary objective is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. These marks were obviously more favorable than a few of its other statistics in the category. Surprisingly, this place also fared well at keeping its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
