Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our short-term care rating. In the area of short-term care, we endeavor to evaluate indicators of a facility's rehabilitation. We analyze a nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every facility employs these types of nurses. However, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final metric we considered in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that 6 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A

Adding to this facility's impressive resume, we gave this facility an A for our inspections rating. Our inspection ratings are based on pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that receive favorable grades in this area tend to have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. A few relatively minor dings aren't necessarily the end of the world.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A in our nursing category. The nursing rating includes a host of factors. The most important factor is the amount of time nurses spend with patients. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Virginia in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by providing better nursing care, such as by having a protocol of turning patients even once per day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The final category we graded is long-term care. This nursing home was given a very good long-term care grade this year, with a grade of B-. While this is not quite as dominant as many of its other category grades, this is still a respectable score in this area. Long-term care grades assess a nursing home's personal care instead of the skilled nursing and healthcare services that are critical to a skilled nursing facility. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 99.06542 percent of its residents, which is higher than the average nursing home. Finally, this place was also able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
