Short-term Care Quality
We were not high on this nursing home's overall grade or its category grades. We gave it a lowly D for our short-term care grade and that turned out to be its best grade. Our short-term care grade is typically employed to measure a facility's rehabilitation services. To offer quality rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to have better levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. Not surprisingly, we learned that this place provides substantially less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the typical nursing home. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who returned home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well here either. In fact, we found that just 5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was well off the national average.
Turning to the area of nursing care, this facility received a grade of just D in this category. Unfortunately, this ended up being one of its better grades. Our nursing grade is primarily associated with the nursing home's nurse staffing. This particular place provided a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This number is quite a bit below the national average. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality measures in calculating our nursing grades. This nursing home performed well when it comes to avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
Does this page answer your questions about Briarcliff Health & Rehabilitation Center?
We wanted to note that this facility received a lowly F for its inspection score. An F in this area is particularly troublesome because it usually points to red flags on the facility's government inspections. For nursing homes that received this poor of an inspection rating, we recommend scrutinizing the severe deficiencies on its inspection report. This particular nursing home was hit with one category G through L deficiency, which rank among the more serious deficiencies. These categories indicate that the deficiencies identified by CMS had potential to cause actual harm to patients. Finally, we also would like to point out that this place was assessed large government fines recently totaling more than $100,000. This usually means that a nursing home's bad track record spanned multiple years.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we looked at is long-term care. This facility received an abysmal grade of F in this category. When facilities receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means the facility did not perform well in our quality measures relating to resident care. After we finished assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. We were a bit bothered by the fact that this nursing home vaccinated just 88.26291 percent of its residents for pneumonia. To our surprise, this facility actually fared well at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. This is its best score in this category.
