Facility Inspections

Grade: A

To go along with its relatively modest overall score, we awarded this nursing home an A for our inspections rating. This grade is far better than the facility's overall grade. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher grades in this category usually have very few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Based on this, we had a generally positive view of this facility's inspections.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

This facility was awarded its second most favorable category score in the category of short-term care. We gave this facility a B- in this area, which is a reasonably acceptable grade. In calculating these short-term care ratings, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The goal is to create a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of various facilities. Unfortunately, we found that this facility provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The more important thing is determining what bearing this had on the quality of care. The final metric we looked at in this category is the number of patients who returned home from the facility. We found that just 5.9 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. Unfortunately, this was below average.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: D

As it turns out, this facility only earned a grade of D for its long-term care score, which is well below average in this category. For long-term care residents, the primary objective is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. Once we concluded our assessment of the volume of nursing care, we then looked at the facility's vaccination record. We were optimistic to discover that this facility vaccinates 98 percent of its patients against pneumonia. Surprisingly, this place also keeps its residents out of the hospital. It had just 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Sadly, a few of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

Switching gears to the next area, this nursing home did not fare very well. With a rock bottom grade of F in nursing, this was this facility's poorest area. When determining a facility's nursing grade, we look at the number of hours nurses are seeing patients as well as the level of licensure of the nurses. This place averaged only 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is not a very impressive figure. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This place fared well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
