Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

In addition to being a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ health inspections in recent years. Its inspections were virtually flawless. These inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This place received 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered severe. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies to be an imminent risk to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

On the list of its many dominant scores, this facility received an excellent long-term care score. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- in that area. Facilities that excel in this category tend to provide residents with closer supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 99.02597 percent of its patients, which is significantly higher than the average nursing home. This facility was also able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had just 1.37 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

Moving on our next area, we gave this facility a score of A- for its short-term care score. This is a first-rate rating. Short-term care grades are commonly used to assess a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation To offer high-end rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to provide higher levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This facility provides more services with registered nurses and physical therapists than most nursing homes we looked at. This is certainly a great sign. The last datapoint we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in North Carolina in this area with 59 percent of its patients returning home. With most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

The final category we graded is nursing, in which this nursing home was given a B. Believe it or not, this was this facility's worst area. A facility is doing something right when it's weakest grade still rates higher than most facilities. When computing our nursing scores, we look at both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the training levels of the nurses. This facility provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these metrics as predictive indicators of the quality of nursing care provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
