Registered Staff Hours
Short-term Care Quality
Although we gave this nursing home a terrible overall score, we awarded it a B- for short-term care. Our short-term care grade is often used to score a nursing home's rehabilitation services. In order to offer highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to provide better levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. We were surprised to find that this facility was below average in the two key staffing areas we looked at. In fact, it supplied fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients who returned home from this facility. We found that 5.5 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit below the national average.
Nurse Quality
We were also surprised to find that this facility received a decent nursing grade this year. We gave it a grade of C in that category. In calculating our nursing ratings, we factor in both staffing levels and the skill levels of the nurses. This facility provides only 0.4 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is a somewhat discouraging figure as it is well below average. Lastly, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics. While this nursing home got docked a bit for nursing hours per resident, it excelled in a few of these quality measures. With less than five percent of its patients sustaining pressure ulcers, it fared remarkably well in this area. This is generally an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as employing a policy of turning patients at least once a day.

Long-term Care Quality
Additionally, we gave this nursing home an F in the area of long-term care. For prospective patients looking for a permanent place to live as opposed to skilled nursing, long-term care grades are an important measure. One of the statistics we considered after nurse's aid hours is vaccines. Fortunately, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 97.28814 percent of its residents. Surprisingly, this facility was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, some of its other scores in the category were not as favorable as these.
Facility Inspections
In our final category of inspections, this nursing home received a terrible score. When a nursing home has this poor of an inspection score, you should expect some severe deficiencies on its inspection report. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to patient safety. This particular nursing home had 4 deficiencies by CMS. The only favorable thing we found is that none of these deficiencies were in the categories that indicate that they caused a threat to resident health or safety. Lastly, this nursing home was cited by CMS for possible abuse or neglect. This is generally a really bad sign. We would never recommend this facility.
