Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall score was not a highlight, it actually excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A for that category, which is one of our best scores. These inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these factors by reviewing copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility received its next most favorable category score in the category of long-term care. We awarded this facility a grade of C in this area, which is a respectable grade. In calculating our long-term care ratings, we assess the assistance with daily living offered to the nursing home's patients. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. Thankfully, this nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is a very respectable figure. This place was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.05 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality
This facility's next best category was nursing, but even there it received a grade of just D. This is still a well below average grade. When calculating a nursing home's nursing grade, we consider the number of hours nurses commit to residents as well as the levels of training of those nurses. This facility averaged only 0.5 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Lastly, we also looked at some nursing quality-based metrics in calculating our nursing ratings. This facility performed well when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these areas to be good measures of the quality of nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
Switching gears to the last category, this facility really didn't fare well in this area either. Due to a bottom of the barrel grade of F in short-term care, this is just about as bad as it gets. Our short-term care scores are crucial for residents needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually mandates more skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes a broad scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. With a score of this caliber for this category, we weren't stunned to learn this nursing home was below average in several staffing metrics we focus on. The facility provided substantially fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most other facilities. The last metric we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents who ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 3.7 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
