Short-term Care Quality
On top of performing well overall, this facility received even higher grades for short-term care. It earned one of our highest grades in that area with a score of A. Our short-term care grades are considered to be more important for those in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally mandates additional skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes not just nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. The last metric we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who ultimately returned home from the nursing home. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in California in this area with 68 percent of its residents returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received a strong nursing score. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B+ in this area. Nursing scores are primarily based on a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This particular facility provided 4.8 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This was one of the highest totals we found. In addition, a significant portion of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. In addition to providing impressive levels of nursing care, this nursing home also excelled in the quality-based metrics we looked at. It performed as well as any facility in the nation in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also excelled in the category of inspections, where it received an impressive grade of B+. Few facilities performed better in this category. These inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This facility was assessed 10 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that CMS didn't deem any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent threat to resident safety or health. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we graded is long-term care. We gave this facility a solid grade in that area, with a grade of B-. While this is not as dominant as a few of this nursing home's other scores, it is still a middle of the pack score. In a long-term care environment, the primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. In addition to providing solid levels of nursing care and other staffing, this nursing home gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. This percentage is better than the average nursing home. This combination proved to be effective as this facility keeps its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
