The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it earned an elite inspection score. Its inspection grade was far superior to its overall grade. In our inspections category, we gave it a grade of A. Inspection ratings account for several factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better scores in this area typically have few of these severe deficiencies. While this place had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. A couple of minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

This nursing home's nursing grade appears to be one of its better features. The facility received a grade of B- in this category. There are a host of criteria within this category. Most of these datapoints reflect staffing levels. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility excelled in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. In fact, it scored well when it comes to minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. Many consider these areas to be good measures of the quality of nursing care. In many cases, the quality of nursing care is just as important as the quantity of hours of care provided.

This facility's next most favorable area came in the area of short-term care. In that area, we gave this facility a C. In this process, we look at a facility's level of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as occupational therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The tricky part is determining what bearing this had on the quality of care. The last metric we considered in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. Switching gears to the last category, this nursing home didn't perform very well. Due to a rock bottom grade of F in long-term care, this is this facility's poorest category. We were optimistic to learn that this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia. To our surprise, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
