Even though we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a decent short-term care rating this year. We gave it a B- in that area. Short-term care grades are commonly used to gauge a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation. To offer high-end rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to offer higher levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. We were surprised to find that this facility was below average in the two key staffing areas we focus on. It provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. It is important to determine whether this is adversely impacting the quality of care. The final statistic we considered in this area is the percentage of patients who ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. This facility performed better in this statistic. It performed better than most facilities in this metric with 50.9 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

This facility really excelled in the category of nursing, where it earned a grade of C. Few places performed better in this category. The nursing rating consists of many components, most of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. Based on the CMS data, this nursing home offers 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also factored a few quality-based metrics into our nursing grades. This nursing home was relatively weak in two of the major datapoints we focus on, with below average scores for minimizing its patients' pressure ulcers and major falls. These areas are typically reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care provided.

Moving on to the area of long-term care, this facility was awarded just a D in this area. When nursing homes receive this kind of grade in long-term care it is often a bad sign for patient care and it may mean that the place is not as well-staffed with nurses and aids. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 92.571434 percent of its patients. This is a bit less than we anticipated but still a reasonably acceptable figure. To our surprise, this nursing home was actually decent at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had just 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. This is its best score in this category.

Moving on our last category of inspections, this nursing home received an F in this area. Since this information is compiled by independent government inspectors, we heavily weight poor results in this area. For facilities with bad inspection scores, you should really focus on any severe deficiencies found on their recent inspection reports. This particular nursing home was assessed a category L deficiency, which is the worst possible category of deficiencies. This category means inspectors identified a widespread deficiency placing resident safety or health in immediate jeopardy. Even a single deficiency in this category will really pull a nursing home's inspection score down. Finally, this facility also received 6 substantiated complaints in recent years. This is yet another bad sign.
