Facility Inspections
In addition to receiving a great overall score, this place also earned first-rate government inspections in recent years. We awarded it one of our better grades in this area, with an A+. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with better scores in this area typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Adding to this facility's list of strengths, it also was given a first-rate long-term care score. We gave them an elite grade of A- in this area. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. Once we finished looking at the volume of care provided by nurses, we turned to the facility's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia can be a dangerous health condition for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a facility does not take any chances. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 2.76 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this admittedly wasn't as strong as some of its other scores in this area, this number may be skewed for some nursing homes due to the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
Short-term Care Quality
The third area we graded was short-term care. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a solid grade of C. In the category of short-term care, we seek to assess measures of a nursing home's rehabilitation. We look at the facility's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical, occupational and other therapists. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home has registered nurses on staff. Not every facility employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last measure we assessed in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is below average.
Nurse Quality
Turning to our final category, this facility was awarded a C in nursing, which is a decent grade. The nursing grade assesses quite a few factors, but the most important consideration is the quantity of nurse hours per patient per week. This nursing home provides 2.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based measures, such as avoiding major falls. Despite not having the highest total nursing hours, this facility actually performed admirably in the area of preventing major falls. This is usually a reliable indicator that a facility has sufficient quality controls in place. Many falls can be avoided if a facility provides enough nurses aids to assist its patients.
