Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall score was not a highlight, it actually excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that category, which is one of our best scores. Our inspection scores are tied to several items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important item to look for on these reports. You should especially avoid facilities that have severe deficiencies associated with risks to resident well being. This facility was hit with 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that the inspectors did not consider any of these deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we gave this nursing home a grade of B in our long-term care category. This is one of our more favorable scores. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 96.90722 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is more than most nursing homes. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Short-term Care Quality
In our next category, we gave this nursing home an F in the category of short-term care. Short-term care ratings are based in part on the facility's quantity of skilled highly skilled professionals. This includes a broad spectrum of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, in addition to other variations of therapy. Given its grade in this area, we were not stunned to find that this facility was subpar in terms of its quantity of registered nurse hours offered to its patients. Frankly, this was about what we expected here. Lastly, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 27.6 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, around half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
Nurse Quality
The final area we assessed was nursing, in which this facility was given an abysmal score in this category as well. It received a lowly F in this category, which is obviously somewhat alarming. The nursing score assesses many components, most of which are based on quantities of nurse staffing. This nursing home offered just 3.3 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This number is significantly below the national average. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this place also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average nursing home. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. These metrics hurt this facility's nursing grade quite a bit.
