Facility Inspections
Although we did not rate this facility highly overall, we want to draw your attention to its excellent government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Arguably the most important factor we consider in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. It is typically in your best interest to avoid places that have too many severe deficiencies. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
The second highest area we awarded this nursing home in any category came in the area of long-term care, where we awarded it a grade of B-. For prospective patients looking for a permanent place to live as opposed to rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. After we finished assessing the quantity of nursing care, we then analyzed the nursing home's vaccination data. We were pleased to find that this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility had 2.25 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure was less impressive than its other scores in the long-term care area.
Short-term Care Quality
Sadly, we gave this facility an F for its short-term care score. Our short-term care ratings are important for individuals seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically utilizes more highly-skilled nursing services. This means a wide scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other types of therapy. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. Lastly, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely wasn't a strength for this nursing home. We found that just 19.7 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. At most facilities, around half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
Nurse Quality
The final area we analyzed is nursing. This nursing home was given a poor grade of F in that category. The nursing rating is based on a number of data points. The most heavily weighted variable is the quantity of hours nurses spend with residents. This nursing home provides 2.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this place also didn't perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics hurt this nursing home's nursing grade quite a bit.
