Facility Inspections
The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an excellent inspection grade. In fact, its inspection grade was far better than its overall grade. In the inspections category, we gave it an A. Perhaps the most critical factor we look at in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Places with higher scores in this category typically avoided the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. While this place had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor dings are not the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
Another one of this facility's more favorable category scores was in the category of short-term care. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of B+. It actually performed better than most facilities in this area. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we look at a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This score is more often than not a meaningful assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this facility submitted data regarding its registered nurse or physical therapy staffing. Finally, we assessed the number of patients that returned home from this nursing home. We found that 6.1 percent of this nursing home's patients were able to return home.

Nurse Quality
Next, we looked at the nursing category where we awarded this nursing home a grade of C, which is a decent grade. In computing our nursing scores, we look at both staffing levels and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. Lastly, while this place got dinged a bit for its nursing hours per resident, it excelled in a few of our quality-based metrics. With fewer than five percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it fared well in this metric.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we graded was long-term care, which ended up being this facility's weakest category. We awarded this facility a grade of D in this area. Unfortunately, this score hurt the facility's overall grade to some degree. For long-term care residents, the facility's primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. After considering the amount of nursing care, we next considered the nursing home's vaccination records. We were pleased to discover that this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. To our surprise, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
