Nurse Quality
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our nursing rating. Nursing grades are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 4.3 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This was one of the more impressive figures we found. In addition, a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. Both of these statistics are impressive. On top of offering impressive levels of care, this nursing home also excelled in several of the quality measures we assessed. With under 5 percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Indiana in this category. This is usually a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Many pressure ulcers could be avoided by providing better nursing care and a policy of moving patients more frequently.
Facility Inspections
This facility has received near flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this category. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this facility had a few deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. A couple relatively minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also received an impressive long-term care score. In fact, we awarded it an above average score of B+ in this area. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. In addition to providing very favorable levels of nurse staffing, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients out of the hospital. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.04 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than many nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
The next category we scored is short-term care. We gave this nursing home one of our better grades in this category, with a B. While this was not on par with some of this facility's other scores, it is nevertheless a positive grade. In computing our short-term care grades, we scrutinize the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This area is frequently a fair measure of a nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. One of this nursing home's strengths is registered nurse hours. We found that it offers more care from registered nurses to its residents than most facilities. The last item we assessed in this category is the percentage of patients who returned home from the nursing home. We found that 36.6 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home rather than remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.
