Facility Inspections
This nursing home received a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its excellent health inspection reports in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Inspection grades account for several factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this category generally have very few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Based on this, we still had a generally favorable view of this facility's inspections.
Long-term Care Quality
This facilities next most favorable area was long-term care. We awarded it a grade of C in this area. This is basically a slightly below average score in this area. For prospective residents in need of a permanent residence rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is a very important category. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 93.666664 percent of its residents. This is somewhat lower than we were hoping for but still a reasonably acceptable figure. On a more positive note, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.17 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than most nursing homes.

Short-term Care Quality
We gave this nursing home just a D for our short-term care rating. This is well below average in this category. Our short-term care ratings are presumably more meaningful for those in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. This means not only nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Given its poor grade, we were not shocked to find that this nursing home provided substantially fewer registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The final metric we assessed in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 41.9 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. This statistic was damning for this facility's short-term care grade.
Nurse Quality
The final area we assessed was nursing, which turned out to be a weak spot for this nursing home. We awarded this facility a D in the area of nursing. When calculating a nursing home's nursing rating, we look at the number of hours nurses are caring for patients as well as the level of skill of those nurses. This nursing home provides 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is slightly below the national average. To pair with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This place had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these statistics hurt this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
