Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

This nursing home received a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its excellent health inspection reports in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Inspection grades account for several factors included in a facility's inspection reports. One key criteria we rely on is the number and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher scores in this category generally have very few severe deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Based on this, we still had a generally favorable view of this facility's inspections.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: C

This facilities next most favorable area was long-term care. We awarded it a grade of C in this area. This is basically a slightly below average score in this area. For prospective residents in need of a permanent residence rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is a very important category. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 93.666664 percent of its residents. This is somewhat lower than we were hoping for but still a reasonably acceptable figure. On a more positive note, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.17 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than most nursing homes.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: D

We gave this nursing home just a D for our short-term care rating. This is well below average in this category. Our short-term care ratings are presumably more meaningful for those in need of rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation generally requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. This means not only nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. Given its poor grade, we were not shocked to find that this nursing home provided substantially fewer registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The final metric we assessed in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 41.9 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. This statistic was damning for this facility's short-term care grade.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

The final area we assessed was nursing, which turned out to be a weak spot for this nursing home. We awarded this facility a D in the area of nursing. When calculating a nursing home's nursing rating, we look at the number of hours nurses are caring for patients as well as the level of skill of those nurses. This nursing home provides 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is slightly below the national average. To pair with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This place had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these statistics hurt this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.

Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility Quality Metrics

Minimizes Pressure Ulcers

Grade: F

In Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility, 9.64% of Patients had Pressure Ulcers

This tells you the percent of residents that suffered from a pressure ulcer. Pressure ulcers, also known as bed sores, are routinely caused by residents staying in one position for too long. Better nursing care can limit the number of pressure ulcers sustained by residents in a nursing home.

Minimizes Serious Falls

Grade: C

In Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility, 3.1% of Patients had Serious Falls

This statistic is a measure of the percentage of long-term stay residents which had a fall leading to serious injury. This is one of the statistics we use in calculating our nursing ratings.

Minimizes Urinary Tract Infections

Grade: B-plus

In Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility, 2.09% of Patients had UTIs

This statistic is an indication of the percentage of long-term stay residents who have experienced UTI's. While more of these infections could reflect poorly on a facility's hygiene protocols, it can be difficult to compare different facilities due to varying reporting standards.

Appropriately Uses Anti-Psychotic Medication

Grade: B-plus

In Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility, 11.62% of Patients use Anti-Psychotic Medication

This figure gauges the percentage of long-term stay residents taking antipsychotic drugs. While antipsychotic medications play an important role in caring for many residents, it is important to make sure these drugs are being used only where medically required. In limited cases, excessive reliance on these medications may indicate a nursing home is using these medications to subdue residents.

Appropriately Uses Anti-Anxiety Medication

Grade: C

In Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility, 13.11% of Patients use Anti-Anxiety Medication

This indicates the percentage of patients given antianxiety drugs. Antianxiety drugs are given to patients suffering from anxiety or depression.

Managing Depression Among Residents

Grade: A-minus

In Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility, 13.02% of Patients

This indicates the percent of patients showing depressive symptoms. Higher levels of depression may be an indicator lower quality care.

Appropriate Vaccine Usage

Grade: D

In Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility, 92.45% of Patients

This is the percentage of patients that received the pneumonia and flu vaccines. High vaccination rates should be standard at this point.

Residents Maintain Autonomy

Grade: C

In Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility, 14.69% Percentage of Patients

This datapoint measures the percent of long-term stay residents who needed additional assistance with activities of daily living over time. ADL's include activities such as getting dressed and using the bathroom. Some would argue that this is a reasonable measure of a resident's well-being.

Ability to Keep Residents Mobile

Grade: A-plus

In Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility, 18.9% Percentage of Residents

This is the percent of residents that were able to retain mobility over time. Optimizing mobility can be a great sign for residents' well-being.

In Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility, 1.2 Hospitalizations per 1,000 resident days

This indicates the number of hospitalizations per 1,000 days of care.

Short-term Care: Rehospitalizations

Grade: F

In Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility, 18.9 Percentage of Residents Rehospitalized

This is a measure of the number of times residents are rehospitalized per thousand days of short-term care.

Short-term Care: ER Visits

Grade: A-minus

In Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility, 8.78 Percentage of Patients

This tells you the number of times residents are sent to the emergency room per thousand days of short-term patient care. There is a correlation between keeping patients out of the emergency room and the overall quality of rehabilitation.

Short-term Care: Facilitates Functional Improvement

Grade: B-minus

In Bethany Nursing Home & Health Related Facility, 74.53% Percentage of Resident

This metric is a measure of the percentage of short-term patients that experienced functional improvements, such as with activities of daily living. Some experts believe that this is a reliable measure of a nursing home's rehabilitation performance.
