Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A

One of the reasons this turned out to be a great facility is that it earned a very impressive short-term care score. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of A. In determining our short-term care ratings, we assess a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This rating is considered to be a solid measure of a facility's rehabilitation. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last metric we considered in this category is the number of patients that eventually returned home from the facility. We found that 6.1 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

Adding to this facility's impressive resume, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A- for our inspections rating. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This particular nursing home received 2 deficiencies on its inspection report. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

The next category we looked at is long-term care. Contributing to its strong profile, this nursing home also performed well in this area. In fact, we awarded it a of A- in that area. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. After assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 98.15838 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which is far higher than the average nursing home. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

The final category we graded was nursing. In this area, we awarded this facility a strong grade of B. In computing a nursing home's nursing grade, we look at the number of hours nurses are seeing patients and the skill levels of those nurses. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as good indicators of the caliber of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
