Facility Inspections
Although we didn't rate this nursing home favorably overall, we actually gave it an excellent score in the category of inspections, where it received an A. Our inspection scores are tied to datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important thing to look for on these inspections. Most importantly, you should avoid facilities with severe deficiencies associated with risks to resident well being. This particular nursing home received 2 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a solid inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility's second most favorable category was its long-term care grade, where it received a grade of C. In the area of long-term care, we look at the amount of services offered by a facility, as opposed to more medically-intensive services. On top of considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is an above average percentage. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Although it had 2.45 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted score was not too far off the national average.
Short-term Care Quality
The next best category we gave this facility in any category came in the category of short-term care, where we gave it a C. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to assess indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We assess a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and various therapists. Unfortunately, we found that this place provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The last metric we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who eventually returned home from the nursing home. This facility performed better in this statistic. We found that it fared better than most nursing homes in this area with 50 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
The last area we looked at was nursing. It received an F in this area, which is an abysmal score. When determining a facility's nursing score, we weigh the quantity of hours nurses are caring for patients and the skill levels of those nurses. This nursing home provides 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is slightly below average. In addition to rating below average in nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also had poor marks in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This place was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in both of these data points. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These metrics pulled down this facility's nursing grade significantly.
