On top of earning a strong overall score, this facility performed even better in our inspections category which is based on the nursing home's recent inspection reports. We gave it an A for this category, which is one of our best scores. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in determining our inspection scores. One key factor is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some of these are relatively insignificant. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.

Additionally, this facility also was given favorable short-term care grades in our assessment. Indeed, we awarded it one of our better grades in that area, with a score of B+. Our short-term care scores are thought to be more meaningful for folks requiring a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually utilizes more skilled nursing services. This includes not merely nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the data they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we assessed the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 0 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

Turning to an additional strength for this nursing home, we awarded them one of our stronger grades in our long-term care category as well, with a B. When nursing homes receive a grade in this range in this category it typically means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is far higher than the majority of nursing homes. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

The final area we analyzed is nursing. In that area, we gave this facility a strong grade of B. Our nursing rating considers several subcategories. The most heavily weighted one is the number of hours nurses spend with patients. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also assessed certain nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these metrics as good measures of the quality of nursing care provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
