Bellefontaine Gardens Nursing & Rehab is an average-sized nursing home in Saint Louis, Missouri. Our grading scheme was not kind to this nursing home, as it received an overall rating of F. In our grading scheme, this is ranked as one of the bottom 10 rated facilities in Saint Louis. In a city with countless other nursing homes, you should be able to find an alternative. We wouldn't blame you if you are ready to stop reading and find another nursing home. Facility Inspections
While we graded this facility incredibly poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable inspection report this year. As a result, it received a decent grade in that category with a score of B-. Inspection scores weigh a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. This facility received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be major deficiencies. This tells you that CMS did not consider any of these deficiencies an immediate threat to patient health or safety. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
Unfortunately, we gave this facility an F for its long-term care score. Facilities that do not fare well in long-term care typically are not as well-staffed and are lagging in some of the areas of routine healthcare services we looked at. One of the datapoints we considered after nurse's aid hours was vaccinations. Frankly, we were a bit worried that this facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to a relatively low 60.538116 percent of its residents. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 2.6 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure is also concerning.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to draw your attention to this facility's poor nursing grade where it received an F. We analyzed the skill-level of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the number of hours those nurses worked with patients, in computing our rating in this category. This place provided only 2.7 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is well below average. To pair with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this nursing home also did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This place had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average facility. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. These statistics pulled down this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we rated is short-term care. This nursing home received a poor grade of F in this area. Short-term care grades are vital for prospective residents looking for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes a vast range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. Given its grade in this area, we weren't surprised to find that this facility was well below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours offered to its patients based on the measures we assessed. Honestly, this was what we expected here. The last statistic we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients that were able to return home from the facility. This facility struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 19.9 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below average.
