Facility Inspections

Grade: A

To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

Compounding its first-rate accomplishments in other areas, we awarded this facility a grade of A for its long-term care score. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care tend to provide residents with closer supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is very impressive. Pneumonia tragically can be a life threatening health condition for nursing home patients so we like it when a facility does not leave this to chance. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

The third area we analyzed was short-term care. This facility was awarded an above average short-term care score, with a grade of B+ in the category. In computing our short-term care scores, we scrutinize a facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This category is considered to be a useful assessment of a facility's rehabilitation. We were not able to track down information on registered nurse or physical therapy staffing for this nursing home. The final datapoint we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We found that 6 percent of this nursing home's patients were able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

Turning to our final area, this facility was given a high-end nursing score. We awarded it a B+ in that area, topping off one of our more impressive profiles. Our nursing score analyzes a handful of components, many of which are based on nursing hours. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as having a policy of turning a patient at least once a day.
