Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

While this facility's overall grade was not bad, it really fared well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A+ for that category, which is one of our best scores. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. While this place had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple of minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Another one of this nursing home's more impressive category scores came in the category of long-term care. In that category, we gave this nursing home a B. Facilities that do well in long-term care typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. Once we looked at the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination statistics. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia. Vaccines are critical to keeping patients healthy. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

Turning to another strength for this facility, it also earned an elite nursing score. In fact, we gave this facility a grade of D. The nursing grade analyzes quite a few factors, most of which are associated with levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home averaged only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing scores. This place performed well when it comes to minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: F

The final area we graded was short-term care. Sadly, it received an F in this area, which is a rock bottom grade. This is obviously a significant concern. Our short-term care grade is commonly employed to gauge a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to provide high-end rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to feature higher levels of highly skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The final metric we considered in this area is the number of patients who eventually returned home from the nursing home. This facility struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 4.2 percent of its residents returning home. This was well below the national average.
