On top of being a first rate nursing home overall, this nursing home also performed well in long-term care, where it earned an A+. Few facilities fared better in this category. Facilities that excel in long-term care typically provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. One of the criteria we considered after nursing hours was vaccines. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. This is a reliable method to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for the elderly population. The last statistic we assessed was its hospitalization rate. Here we found that this nursing home had 2.82 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Although this admittedly wasn't as impressive as most of its other scores in this category, this figure may be skewed for some nursing homes based on some of the preexisting medical conditions of patients.

This nursing home also earned an A+ inspection score, making it one of the few places to receive multiple A+'s in our categories. This is based on the facility's government inspections. Our inspection ratings are tied to items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that excel in this area have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. In calculating a facility's nursing score, we look at the number of hours nurses spend with patients and the levels of training of those nurses. This facility provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at some quality-based measures in this category. This facility fared well in some of the quality measures we looked at. For example, in terms of the number of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this nursing home performed better than the national average. This is generally an indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can many times be avoided with better nursing care.

Moving on to the next category, this nursing home was awarded an acceptable short-term care grade. Even though this is not nearly as strong as many of its other scores, this is still not a bad grade. In crafting our short-term care ratings, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to formulate a scale for sizing up the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The last measure we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients that returned home from the nursing home. We found that just 44.5 percent of this facility's patients returned home. Unfortunately, this was below average.
