Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

One of the many reasons this proved to be a great nursing home is that it received a very impressive long-term care rating. In this area, we awarded this nursing home an A. When nursing homes receive this type of score in this category it is usually a good sign for patient care and indicates that the facility is well-staffed with nurses and aids. In addition to considering the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is too frequently a life threatening ailment for nursing home residents so we strongly prefer when a nursing home does not roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

Adding to its impressive category grades, this nursing home also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received a grade of A-. These inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

This facility also was awarded a strong short-term care grade. Indeed, we awarded it an above average grade of B in this area. In calculating our short-term care ratings, we assess a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other types of therapists. This area is frequently a fair measure of the facility's rehabilitation. Fortunately, it appear that this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these types of nurses. However, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home.

The final area we rated was nursing, where this facility was given a B. Although this proved to be its worst category rating, this is nevertheless a favorable score. We scrutinized the levels of nurses employed by the nursing home, in addition to the quantity of time the nurses worked with residents, in determining our score in this category. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed certain nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as good indicators of the caliber of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
