In addition to receiving a great overall score, this facility also earned an excellent short-term care score, with an A. In determining our short-term care scores, we look at the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other licensed professionals. This rating is often a solid assessment of the nursing home's rehabilitation services. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. The final measure we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. This place fared as well as just about any facility in Massachusetts in this area with 63.9 percent of its residents returning home. For most nursing homes, less than half of their short-stay patients are able to return home.

Turning to our inspection category, this nursing home excelled in that area, which is based on the facility's recent inspections. In fact, we awarded it an A for that category. Arguably the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with higher grades in this area typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. The nursing grade assesses many subcategories, most of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed certain nursing quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these datapoints as good measures of the caliber of nursing care provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

The final category we analyzed is long-term care. This facility was awarded a very good long-term care grade this year, with a grade of B-. Even though this was not as elite as many of its other scores, this remains an acceptable rating in this category. Our long-term care grade assesses a nursing home's personal care instead of the skilled therapy and medical services that are critical to a rehabilitation facility. One of the data points we considered on top of nurse's aid hours is vaccinations. Thankfully, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 93.93939 percent of its patients. This facility was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
