Long-term Care Quality
This facility really excelled in long-term care. In fact, we gave it an A for that category. This saved its overall profile. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it has plenty of staff and is a quality place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home vaccinated 99.52153 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients out of the hospital. The last statistic we looked at is the facility's hospitalization rate. We found that this nursing home had 2.95 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this wasn't as favorable as some of its other scores in this area, this number may be skewed for some nursing homes due to the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing our inspection ratings. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the quantity of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being quite insignificant. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Nurse Quality
Moving on to another strength for this facility, it also earned an elite nursing score. In fact, we gave this facility an D. The nursing grade includes many datapoints, but the primary one is the number of nurse hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. On top of receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this nursing home was less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and found that this facility was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this statistic.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we graded is short-term care, which ended up being this facility's weakest area. We gave it an F for this area, which is clearly very disappointing. In computing our short-term care scores, we scrutinize the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This grade is considered to be a useful assessment of the facility's ability to rehabilitate patients. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other facilities. The last datapoint we considered in this category is the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 29.5 percent of its residents returning home. This was well below average.
