Facility Inspections

Grade: B-plus

Although we were not complementary of this nursing home's overall performance, it actually received an impressive inspection report this year with few dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that category with a B+. Our inspection grades weigh several factors found on a nursing home's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid facilities with too many severe deficiencies flagged. This nursing home received 8 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This indicates that the government inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Another one of this nursing home's higher category grades was in the area of short-term care. In that category, we awarded this nursing home a B. In determining our short-term care scores, we assess the nursing home's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other licensed professionals. This grade is more often than not a meaningful assessment of the nursing home's rehabilitation. We were extremely impressed to discover that this nursing home offers its residents significantly more physical therapist hours than most other facilities. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the nation with 65.7 percent of its patients returning home.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: F

In our next category, we gave this facility an F in the category of long-term care. Long-term care scores in this range generally are a bad sign for the quantity and quality of care provided by nurses and aids, as well as the levels of routine medical care available. After considering the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination data. Frankly, we were a bit alarmed this facility vaccinated 56.47059 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is quite a bit below what we expected. Surprisingly, this nursing home wasn't as bad as we expected at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Although it had 2.89 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric wasn't bad since it had more complicated patients.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

The final category we analyzed is nursing. Sadly, it received an F in this category, which is a bottom of the barrel grade. Our nursing grade is based on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We consider both the levels of skill of those nurses and the amount of time spent with residents. This nursing home provides 2.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. To go along with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this place also did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average nursing home. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. These metrics hurt this facility's nursing rating significantly.
