Facility Inspections
We also wanted to point out that this facility has received near flawless inspections recently. We gave them an A+ in this category. Inspection grades weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Places with higher grades in this area tend to have very few severe deficiencies. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple relatively minor dings are not the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this nursing home so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing rating. This proved to be its second best category grade. In that area, we gave this facility an A+. Our nursing grade is primarily tied to a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided 5 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This was one of the better figures we found. In addition, a significant portion of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. In addition to offering high levels of nursing care, this place was also above average in several of the major quality measures we assessed in this category. For example, it performed well in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. These areas are generally good measures of the quality of nursing care a facility offers.
Short-term Care Quality
An additional strength for this facility was short-term care, where it was given an A+ grade. This is just about as good as it gets in this area. Short-term care grades are often used to assess a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation In order to offer high-end rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to offer higher levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. This facility provided more registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most nursing homes. This is what we like to find when assessing a facility in this category. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who ultimately returned home from this facility. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy hours, we found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in the nation with 65.5 percent of its patients returning home.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on to our final area, this facility was given a highly favorable long-term care score. In fact, we gave it a grade of B+ in this area, wrapping up one of our more impressive profiles. Nursing homes that do well in this category tend to be well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. One of the data points we considered in addition to this facility's above average nursing hours was vaccinations. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for seniors. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.42 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes.
