Facility Inspections
On top of earning a quality overall score, this nursing home also earned excellent inspections recently. We gave it one of our best grades in that category, with an A. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in calculating our inspection scores is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places with higher grades in this category most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Fortunately, although this place had a few minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G through L. This means that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. We should point out that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in the industry.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also was superb in the area of short-term care, where we gave it a score of A. Few nursing homes fared better in this area. With our short-term care assessment, we attempt to create a meaningful barometer for rehabilitation. In doing so, we analyze a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of physical therapy per week to its residents. The final metric we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in California in this area with 60.9 percent of its patients returning home. For most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A for our inspections rating. Nursing grades are largely tied to a facility's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is better than what is offered by most facilities. Lastly, this facility also excelled in several of the quality measures we looked at. With fewer than five percent of its residents suffering from pressure ulcers, this place performed as well as any nursing home the country in this category. This is often an indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls. Many pressure ulcers can be avoided by providing better nursing care and having a system of turning patients even once per day.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we assessed was long-term care. This nursing home was given a better than average nursing rating this year, with a grade of B. Even though this was not as impressive as many of its other category grades, this remains one of our stronger scores in this category. Nursing homes that receive this kind of score in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to ensure patients are kept in good health. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 99.35065 percent of its residents, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is often a deadly illness for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home does not take any chances. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
