Even though we graded this nursing home incredibly poorly overall, it received a fairly respectable short-term care rating this year. We gave it a C in that area. Our short-term care grade is generally employed to grade a nursing home's rehabilitation services. To offer good rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to feature better levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. Unfortunately, we found that this nursing home provided fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The more important thing is determining what effect this had on the quality of care. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents that returned home from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit below average.

Remarkably, we awarded this nursing home a grade of C for our nursing rating, which isn't a bad grade. In computing a nursing home's nursing grade, we look at the amount of time nurses are caring for residents and the level of skill of those nurses. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Lastly, although this nursing home got docked a bit for its nursing hours, it actually excelled in some of our quality measures. With fewer than five percent of its residents experiencing pressure ulcers, it performed well in this area.

We were also pleasantly surprised to discover that this nursing home received a decent long-term care grade this year. We gave it a grade of C in that category. For long-term care residents, the nursing home's primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients, which is a very respectable datapoint. Lastly, this place was also able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.04 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Turning our final area of inspections, this facility received an F here. For places that received this poor of an inspection score, we recommend scrutinizing any severe deficiencies on its inspection report. This nursing home was assessed 2 deficiencies by CMS. The only positive thing we can say is that none of the deficiencies were in the categories that suggest that they posed a risk to resident safety or health. Finally, we need to point out that this place was assessed significant government fines of more than $100,000. This usually means that a bad performance spanned more than one year.
