Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. Inspection grades are tied to several datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that receive favorable grades in this area tend to have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This facility was assessed 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This means that CMS didn't deem any of these deficiencies to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A

This nursing home fared well in the category of long-term care. As a result, we gave it a score of A for that area, which is one of our higher grades. Facilities that do well in long-term care typically provide patients with more supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. On top of looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly is often a deadly condition for nursing home residents so we like it when a facility doesn't take any chances. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-minus

The next highest grade we gave this nursing home came in the category of nursing, where we gave it a grade of B-. This wasn't quite as good as some of its other scores, but a grade in this range is not the end of the world. In determining a nursing home's nursing score, we weigh the number of hours nurses are caring for residents and the skill levels of the nurses. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this place actually fared better in some of the quality measures we looked at. It performed well when it comes to minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good measures of the quality of nursing care. In some cases, the quality of nursing care is every bit as important as the number of hours of care provided.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The next area we looked at was this facility's worst area. However, even in its worst category we still gave it a decent grade of C for our short-term care category. In calculating these short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The goal is to devise a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Unfortunately, we were not able to locate information about this nursing home's registered nurse or physical therapy staffing. The last measure we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents that ultimately were able to return home from the facility. We found that just 4.3 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
