Facility Inspections
The primary reason this nursing home received a decent overall grade is its impeccable inspections in recent years. We awarded it one of our higher grades in that category, with a grade of A+. This is a notably better score than the place's overall grade, which was decent but certainly not elite. Our inspection scores are based on several datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that excel in this category typically have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these places generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
In addition, we also would like to point out that this nursing home received favorable long-term care marks in this assessment. We awarded them one of our more favorable grades in that category, with a B. This turned out to be the nursing home's second highest score. When facilities receive a score in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping residents healthy. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.97 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Short-term Care Quality
This facilities next most favorable category was short-term care. We gave it a B- in this category. This is essentially a middle of the pack grade in this area. Our short-term care scores are likely most important for residents needing rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually requires additional skilled nursing services. This includes not only nursing, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other types of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this facility employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these types of nurses. However, according to the data this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. The last statistic we looked at in this area is the number of patients that eventually returned home from the nursing home. This facility performed better in this statistic. This place fared better than most facilities in this area with 53.8 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
The next category we graded is nursing, which proved to be this facility's weakest category. We awarded this facility a grade of D in that area. Sadly, this grade hurt the nursing home's overall profile a bit. In determining our nursing scores, we look at both nursing hours and the skill levels of the nurses. With a meager 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day, this facility's nurse staffing levels were well below average. In addition to receiving below average scores for nursing hours, this place was a bit less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of residents suffering pressure ulcers and found that this nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this metric. This is a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, this statistic pulled down this facility's nursing score substantially.
