Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

In addition to performing well in its overall grade, this nursing home performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A-. Inspection grades are tied to datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that receive favorable grades in this category typically have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these places should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This means that CMS did not deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should point out that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in this industry.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This facility received high grades in the area of short-term care as well. As a result, we gave it one of our highest grades in that category with a area of A-. Our short-term care grade is commonly employed to assess a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To offer highly scored rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must offer higher levels of skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these types of nurses. However, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final measure we considered in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that 5.4 percent of this nursing home's residents were able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

Another one of this facility's impressive category grades came in the area of nursing care. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B. Our nursing rating focuses on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of training of the nurses as well as the amount of time spent with patients. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as employing a policy of turning patients more often.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

Switching gears to our next category, this facility was awarded a B- in long-term care, which is generally an acceptable rating. For patients looking for a permanent place to live rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is an important category. After assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is more than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, this place was also able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
