Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

We also found that this nursing home excelled in long-term care. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Nursing homes that receive this kind of grade in this category tend to provide consistent around the clock care to ensure residents are kept in good health. After assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination records. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients healthy. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

This facility also received a virtually flawless inspection. As a result, it earned one of our highest scores in that area with a score of A+. This was one of the few facilities to receive multiple A+ category grades. Arguably the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's inspection reports. Places with higher grades in this category typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This place received 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that the government inspectors did not deem any of the deficiencies to create an immediate threat to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

This facility also excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Nursing scores are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This facility provided 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this place excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home South Dakota in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a protocol of moving residents more often.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

In the final category, we awarded this facility a grade of A+ for its short-term care rating. This finished off an elite profile. In the category of short-term care, we attempt to qualify measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not every nursing home employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the data this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final datapoint we looked at in this category is the number of patients that returned home from the facility. We found that 0 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home as opposed to remaining at the nursing home on a permanent basis.
