Facility Inspections
We also would like to point out the fact that this facility has earned excellent government inspections recently. We gave them an A in this area. Perhaps the most important factor we consider in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Facilities with higher scores in this area most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. While this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
We also wanted to draw your attention to the fact that this nursing home was awarded an elite grade of A in our long-term care category. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care tend to be well-staffed and provide extensive hands on care to patients. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia is often a life or death health condition for nursing home patients so we like it when a facility doesn't leave its residents vulnerable. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.66 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Nurse Quality
Among its many impressive grades, this facility received an excellent nursing grade. In fact, we gave it a grade of A in that category. Our nursing grade is primarily tied to a nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This nursing home performed better than average in this area. This is often a good indicator that a place has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can typically be avoided if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we analyzed is short-term care. This nursing home received a strong nursing rating this year, with a grade of B. While this was not as good as many of its other grades, this is still one of the stronger grades for that category. Short-term care grades are crucial for individuals needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually utilizes additional skilled nursing. This means a broad scope of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it performed decently in this area, with 46 percent of its patients returning home.
