Facility Inspections

Grade: A

In addition to performing well in its overall grade, this nursing home performed at an even higher level in the area of inspections. In fact, it received a nearly flawless inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A. Inspection ratings are tied to many datapoints located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes that score well in this category tend to have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. This facility was hit with 6 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered severe. This tells you that the government inspectors didn't consider any of these deficiencies an imminent threat to patient safety or health. We should note that deficiency-free inspection reports are uncommon in this industry.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B

Contributing to its profile, this nursing home also earned a grade of B for its long-term care rating. This is an above average score in this category. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. One of the datapoints we considered after nursing hours was vaccines. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the nursing home population. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

Another strong feature for this facility is that it received an impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of B. In determining our nursing scores, we weigh both staffing levels and the training levels of those nurses. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place Florida in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as employing a policy of turning residents more frequently.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-minus

The final category we analyzed was short-term care. This facility was given a grade of B- in this category. In determining our short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The goal is to devise a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. We were not able to track down information about this nursing home's registered nurse or physical therapy staffing. The last item we considered in this area is the number of residents who ultimately were able to return home from the facility. We found that just 4.9 percent of this facility's residents returned home. This figure was below average.
