Although we were not high on this facility overall, we awarded it a grade of B+ for our inspections rating. This score is far more impressive than the place's overall grade. Inspection ratings account for several factors found on a facility's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. You should avoid facilities with a bunch of deficiencies flagged. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. A few minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.

We also want to point out that this facility received a decent grade in our nursing category. We awarded it a grade of C in the area. When determining our nursing grades, we look at both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the training levels of the nurses. According to CMS records, this facility averaged 4.7 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. Keep in mind that when we compute our nursing ratings, we apply more weight to hours performed by nurses with a higher level of skill. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based measures, such as preventing major falls. This nursing home performed admirably in this area. Avoiding serious falls is often a good indicator that a facility has quality controls in place. Many falls can be avoided if a facility offers enough nurses aids to assist its residents.

The third most favorable area we gave this facility in any area came in the category of short-term care, where we awarded it a C. In determining our short-term care grades, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our purpose is to devise a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of nursing homes. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. The last item we considered in this area is the number of patients who who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that just 44.1 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

The final category we scored is long-term care, in which this facility was given a very poor grade in this area as well. It received a lowly F in this area, which is obviously a major disappointment. For residents seeking a permanent place to live rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are a key measure. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 94.51613 percent of its patients, which is higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. To our surprise, this place also wasn't as bad as we expected at keeping its residents out of the hospital. While it had 1.94 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic wasn't bad due to it having more complex patients.
