Facility Inspections
While this nursing home's overall score was not a highlight, it actually excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that area, which is one of our highest scores. Inspection scores weigh a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the number and severity of deficiencies. You generally want to avoid facilities with a bunch of deficiencies flagged. While this facility had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
Sadly, this nursing home only received a D for its short-term care grade, which is actually one of its better category grades. Our short-term care ratings are based in part on the facility's quantity of skilled nursing services. This includes a vast spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, in addition to other types of therapy. With a score in this range in this area, we weren't stunned to learn this place was below average in two of the key staffing areas we assess. It provided substantially fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most nursing homes. Finally, we considered the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We were surprised to find that it performed better in this area, with 54.8 percent of its residents returning home. This was just about this nursing home's sole highlight in this area.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's second least favorable category is long-term care, where it earned just a D in that area. This is a relatively poor grade. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. One of the factors we considered in addition to nursing hours is vaccinations. Fortunately, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. Unfortunately, this place's hospitalization rate was far less favorable. We found that this nursing home had 2.18 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a concerning rate.
Nurse Quality
The next category we rated is nursing, in which this facility was given a very poor grade here as well. It received a lowly F for this area, which is obviously a major disappointment. Nursing scores are heavily correlated with levels of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, which is below average. To pair with its low totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this place also did not fare as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This place had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average nursing home. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these statistics hurt this facility's nursing rating quite a bit.
