Short-term Care Quality
On top of performing well overall, this nursing home received high marks for short-term care as well. It received our highest grade in that category with an A+. Our short-term care grades are considered to be more meaningful for patients in need of a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically mandates more skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes not merely nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other types of therapy. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who ultimately returned home from this facility. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy hours, we found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in the country in this area with 62.9 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A in our nursing category. Nursing grades are primarily based on a nursing home's nurse staffing. This facility provided 4 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. Roughly one quarter of that care was provided by registered nurses, which are among the most highly skilled nurses. Both of these figures easily beat out the national average. Lastly, this nursing home was also above average in each of the major quality-based metrics we looked at in this category. By way of illustration, it performed well when it comes to avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. These areas are generally reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care a facility provides.
Facility Inspections
Adding another impressive category grade, we gave this facility a grade of B+ for our inspections category. Inspection scores weigh a host of factors included in a nursing home's inspection report. One key criteria we weigh heavily is the number and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this category typically have very few severe deficiencies. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A couple minor dings are not something to panic about.
Long-term Care Quality
The next category we analyzed was long-term care. In this category, we gave this nursing home an impressive grade of B. Nursing homes that receive this type of grade in long-term care tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure residents are well cared for. One of the factors we considered on top of nurse's aid hours was vaccines. This nursing home provided the pneumonia vaccine to 96.76768 percent of its residents. This is a great way to avoid unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the elderly population. Finally, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. With 1.88 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility is close to average in this area.
