Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize that this nursing home excelled in our nursing category. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Nursing grades are largely associated with a facility's level of nurse staffing. This nursing home provided 4.7 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, which is among the highest totals in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most skilled levels of nurses. We are really impressed by these statistics. In addition to offering high levels of care, this place also excelled in the quality-based metrics we looked at. It performed as well as any facility in Minnesota in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
Facility Inspections
The next category we looked at was inspections, where this facility also received an A+ grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection scores. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some are quite insignificant. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we were able to find information about this nursing home's deficiencies. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
An additional strength for this nursing home was long-term care, where it was awarded an A+ rating. This is just about as dominant as it gets in this category. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it typically means it has plenty of staff and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. One of the factors we considered after this facility's impressive nursing hours was vaccines. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccines are a great way to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for seniors. This combination proved to be effective as this place was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to the fourth area, this nursing home also was given an A+ short-term care rating, leaving it as one of just a few of nursing homes to achieve straight A+'s. In the category of short-term care, we seek to qualify indicators of a nursing home's rehabilitation services. We analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. This nursing home excelled at the highest level in the two key staffing areas we looked at. In fact, it offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. Finally, we looked at the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of facilities in this area with 64.8 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most nursing homes.
